Georgia hopes to be an official NATO candidate state at the Bucharest NATO Summit in April.
The Georgian president, Mihail Saakaşvili said he views the upcoming Bucharest NATO Summit as a chance for his country, and Ukraine,  to be selected for membership in the alliance, declares news agency AFP. "There is a chance for Georgia and Ukraine to become official candidate states for NATO," Saakashvili said in a news conference, after the meeting with the Polish President Lech Kaczynski.
According to the Georgian president, the decisions concerning NATO enlargement could be taken during the Bucharest NATO Summit. Tbilisi considers that an intense diplomatic campaign will be developed for Georgia to be given a positive NATO vote during this summit. Saakaşvili announced his intentions to visit Washington and that Georgian official delegations will arrive at Brussels before the end of March, as well as a visit in Tbilisi of the Ukranian president Viktor Iuşcenko. ”This month is decisive for Georgia as far as its political objective is concerned, as it stops being an utopia”, the Georgian president said. The Polish president Lech Kaczynski declared that Poland was ready to support Georgia's efforts to join NATO and that it also supported Georgia's European prospects.
United States of America strongly support Georgia's NATO bid, and this situation worries its neighbour, Russia.

During the Bucharest NATO Summit, “Poland will support Georgia’s efforts to join NATO” – the Georgian Minister of Foreign Affairs, David Bakradze, declared. During his visit in Warsaw, Bakradze declared to the Georgian journalists that “the Polish officials will strongly support Georgia’s efforts to join NATO”. The chief of the Georgian diplomatic delegation highlighted the fact that “during this summit, the most important thing for Georgia is to become a candidate state for NATO”. “We still have four weeks to prepare ourselves for the Bucharest NATO Summit and we have concrete plans concerning this issue. Poland has a very special role, as it is our main ally in Europe which supports  our NATO membership” – Bakradze declared. On 26 February, Mihail Saakasvili said that, during the Bucharest NATO Summit in April, the member states will examine the issue on “Georgia’s and Ukraine’s future NATO membership”. To become a NATO candidate state is very important for Georgia. In Brussels, on 7th March, during the meeting of the NATO Council, a preliminary decision concerning this isue will be taken” – Saakasvili declared.
