The "Kommersant - Ukraina" publication quotes the USA Ambassador in Kiev, William Taylor, in its issue from the 24th of January- the Ambassador stated that there are some NATO member states who support Kiev’s application to attend the Pre-accesion Plan to the North-Atlantic Alliance. "I could nominate the respective countries, but it’s better for their leaders to do so. The pre-accession topic is currently under detailed debate within NATO, and we’ll have an answer to the issue soon" – said Taylor.
President Viktor Iuscenko, Premier Iulia Timosenko and the President of the Parliament, Arseni Iateniuk, signed a letter on the 15th of January 2008, addressed to the NATO Secretary General, Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, in which they inform that Ukraine wishes to take part in the NATO Pre-accession Plan and they hope for this issue to be positively answered during the Allience Summit hosted in Bucharest in the beginning of April. The opposition has immediatelly reacted and blocked the tribune of the Parliament, which made Iateniuk postpone the closure of the first session of the Ukrainian legislative by one week.
William Taylor considers that the Supreme Rada should not make such a fuss about it, because all the procedures necessary for the accession of a country will follow, plus the population will be consulted on a local level. "In order to receive a country in the Alliance we need the agreement of all parties involved, and I doubt that there will be anyone rejecting Ukraine’s application by veto" - concluded Taylor.
