The General Secretary of NATO, Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, supports Croatia, Albania and Macedonia’s aspirations of joining the North Atlantic Alliance at the April Summit in Bucharest. “It is important to create new dynamics in the region; that is why I hope that at the Bucharest Summit we will open the Alliance door for new members from this area” stated the NATO official at the Security Politics Conference in München, referring to the Balkan region. The NATO Members are currently analyzing whether Albania, Croatia and Macedonia fulfill a series of military and democratic requirements in order to join NATO.
On the same topic, the German Defense Minister Franz Jozef Jung declared, at the same München Conference that he is “optimistic about Croatia’s accession, and maybe about Albania’s and Macedonia’s as well”.
