The Romanian Defense Minister, Teodor Melescanu, insisted, at the Informal Reunion of the NATO Defense Ministers, that Romania maintains its KFOR contribution at the current level of 150 militaries. According to a Defense Ministry press release, Melescanu stressed the necessity for a channeling of the KFOR mission on aspects of regional security and stability, thus keeping its neutrality from political issues in the region. According to the MAp, most of the discussions held during the reunion addressed the ISAF operation, conducted by NATO in Afghanistan. The preparations of the Bucharest NATO Summit debates brought forward the following subjects: the necessity of creating a long-term-vision of the NATO involvement in Afghanistan, based on an increased Alliance cohesion around the main security topics – especially the South of Afghanistan, the gradual takeover by the Afghan army of the responsibilities related to its own security, as well as the necessity of increasing the coordination with other International Organizations.
The Defense Minister, Teodor Melescanu, and the Chief of Romanian General Staff, Admiral Gheorghe Marin, took part, on Wednesday and Friday, at the Informal Reunion of the NATO Defense Ministers, that took place in Vilnius (Lithuania). On the Romanian delegation sent at Vilnius were also present Romania’s Ambassador at NATO, Sorin Ducaru, and the head of the Romanian Military Representative to NATO and EU, Lieutenant General Sorin Ioan.
