Information security and anti-missile shield – on the Bucharest Summit Agenda
The NATO Defense Ministers discussed, Friday, at Vilnius, the manner and domains where the Alliance can make progress until the Bucharest Summit, so that the reunion held at the beginning of April allows the passing of a large number of resolutions.
The informal meeting at Vilnius reached the conclusion that NATO should benefit from a substantial policy regarding the information security. Among other domains whose importance was reaffirmed at Vilnius appears the NATO Response Force.
The Ministers also addressed the anti-missile defense matter, NATO undertaking efforts in order to define the role of the Alliance, with the specification that bilateral discussions on the same matter are being held separately between the United States and some of the Allies.
The General Secretary of NATO, Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, declared yesterday in a press conference that NATO is discussing at the moment the matter of the anti-missile shield, both technically and politically, so that a decision will be taken at the Bucharest Summit.  “In the remaining weeks until the Bucharest Summit we are preparing what we hope will materialize as a Summit Resolution. Not a definitive one, of course, since there are many aspects to be solved. Aspects such: which is the NATO responsibility in the anti-missile defense and how will it look, considering the USA system. This is the topic on the Summit Agenda” said the NATO official.
On the other hand, according to the NATO site, the new challenges in the field of security – such as information security and maritime monitoring – will be at the top of the Bucharest Summit Agenda.
