NATO Secretary General – believes that the Bucharest Summit will run smoothly

NATO Secretary General, Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, visited Bucharest and stated that the North  - Atlantic Alliance Summit hosted in Bucharest in April, this year, will run smoothly, adding that he is ‘extremely interested’ in participating at the high – level meeting in Romania. “I would like to restate my belief that this Summit will run smoothly: firstly, I am convinced that Romania is capable and prepared to host this important event successfully and secondly, and secondly, it will be a success also regarding the substance of issues discussed on the NATO Summit agenda”, Jaap de Hoop Scheffer highlighted. “Clearly, the Romanian hosts have preparations well in hand,” NATO Secretary General said. “ In the weeks to come there is more work to be done. Things will have to speed up, but I am convinced that this Summit will be very well organized”.
The most important NATO Summit up to now
“Let me start by saying that it will be the largest NATO Summit up to now, in terms of the number of delegations. The Summit brings together NATO Partnership, NATO Council. Also, our operations in Afghanistan unite 26 NATO allied states and other contributing countries to the situation in Afghanistan, as well as the Afghan ex – president Kazai and states, such as Japan, the European Union, the United Nations, that in terms of international bodies.
Overall that makes the Summit a highly important premier, and it is so, also because we hope to make progress in the long-term engagements of the international community in Afghanistan”, stated the NATO Secretary General on Friday, in Bucharest.
« A second important issue on the agenda is NATO enlargement. Well, there are no entrance tickets to this event, the NATO Allies have committed to issue invitations at Bucharest to aspirant countries that meet our performance-based standards. Clearly, we will discuss about the new threats and challenges; another topic on the NATO agenda will be antimissile defense. Thus, the Summit agenda will be very busy”, he concluded.
