President Basescu gives details of NAC conclusions

President Traian Basescu said on Thursday that the North Atlantic Council (NAC), taking into account the Kosovo precedent, decided that the meeting's conclusions should include a reference to NATO's backing the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of the Republic of Moldova, Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan.

The Romanian president underscored the importance of a chapter on the Black Sea having been included in the meeting's conclusions, by which the region's strategic importance is recognised and by which NATO backs the progress made by the regional organisations.

The North Atlantic Council decided to firmly show its intention and wish that Ukraine and Georgia become NATO members, if the two states meet the requirements, Basescu said by quoting the conclusions of the NAC meeting.

Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Serbia have received an increase in the level of their cooperation with NATO from partnership for peace to intensified dialogue, he announced, adding that 'There is no request by Serbia to this effect, but there had been insisted inside NATO that Serbia be guaranteed its relation with NATO'.
