Finding answers to problems between Russia and NATO depends on Putin's stand in Bucharest, says Scheffer
Finding answers in Bucharest to the problems between Russia and NATO on issues like Kosovo, the anti-missile shield and the CFE Treaty depends on the openness Russian President Vladimir Putin will show after his arrival in Romania, NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer said on Wednesday.
Solutions to the problems to be discussed at the NATO-Russia Council on Friday will be found depending on Putin, on whether he will come to the Summit without prejudice, Scheffer said in an address to the Trans-Atlantic Forum staged by the German Marshall Fund on the sidelines of the Alliance Summit.
He underscored the Alliance had a good cooperation with Moscow on issues like Russia's support for transports necessary to the ISAF mission in Afghanistan, the training of Afghan officers who combat the drug trafficking in the country, the global fight against terrorism and the rescue operations on sea.
Scheffer said that a political impulse for a superior strategic collaboration is missing.
He voiced trust that the talks within the NATO-Russia Council will be constructive, in the respect of finding real solutions to problems and not to marking some image points to the detriment of the Alliance.
