Traian Basescu: NATO enlargement must consider the current regional context
“Romania will comply with its engagements of providing for international security, regardless whether we refer to our military presence in the western Balkans, in Afghanistan, in Iraqi or in Africa”, stated President Traian Basescu on Wednesday when meeting with the representatives of the Diplomatic Body accredited in Bucharest. Talking about the NATO Summit from April, and whose “main topic will be the enlargement of the Alliance”, the President of Romania pleaded for  “an enlargement comprising all the 3 candidate states from the Balkans: Croatia, Macedonia, Albania”. Basescu argued that, “besides these countries’ performance, NATO enlargement will also have to consider the current regional context. Also, Romania believes that Georgia may at this stage receive the ‘membership action plan’ and we also believe that Ukraine’s request should be considered”, says the President.
Traian Basescu also expressed his hope that “in Bucharest the allies will reconfirm their merged approach and merged actions in respect to Afghanistan, together with a signal regarding the necessity of increased solidarity coming from the entire international community”.
