The President Traian Basescu exposed on Thursday Romania’s position regarding the invitation of some states in order to improve the relations with the Northern-Atlantic Alliance, decisions upon which the NATO summit from Bucharest 2-4 April would decide. With the occasion of the press conference with the foreign media accredited in Bucharest the President underlined the Romania’s support for the NATO opening towards Ukraine and Georgia. “Romania wished eagerly that NATO would take into consideration the requests of these two states to be included in the Merger Action Plan (MAP)”, declared the Head of the State, underlying that “those countries should be offered the perspective to accomplish their desire to become NATO members as soon as they accomplish the accession criteria”. Such a possibility, estimated Traian Basescu, “should not bother Moscow because there are two sovereign countries /.../, which can form a bridge between NATO and Russia whose interests should be respected”.
Referring to Croatia, Macedonia and Albania President Basescu expressed once again Bucharest’s hope that at the summit from next week those three states will be invited to join the Alliance.
Regarding the other former-Yugoslavian states President declared himself in favor of a “new status” regarding the relations between NATO and Bosnia-Herzegovina and Montenegro, status which after his opinion would “pass from the Peace Partnership to the stage of intensified dialogue”, precursory to MAP. The solution would be desired also for Serbia but “the political conditions are not proper” for this purpose, mentioned also President Traian Basescu with this occasion.
