„Defense against terrorism” is one of the NATO Summit topics and refers mainly to the „Active Endeavour” operation, the only anti-terrorism NATO mission conducted according to Art. 5.
As part of the „Active Endeavour” operation, under the command of Vice-Admiral Roberto Cesaretti, Commander of the Allied Maritime Department of Naples, NATO forces are conducting surveillance operations of the maritime communication routes from the Mediterranean Sea. „Active Endeavour” operation is heading towards a moment when the permanent presence of the NATO naval force will no longer be necessary, since a network of IT data analysis and collecting systems in the maritime field will provide for the accomplishment of the missions. Currently, 31 nations exchange maritime info through a NATO non-classified network, which contributes to an updated image in real time of the maritime situation. More information on the “Active Endeavour” operation can be obtained by accessing:  http://www.afsouth.nato.int/JFCN_Operations/ActiveEndeavour
