The Minister of Defense, Teodor Melescanu, hopes that the NATO Summit of 2 - 4 April from Bucharest should bring a new vision and a coherent strategy regarding Afghanistan.
While on the Bobocu airdrome, on the occasion of the repatriation of the military-hero who died while serving in the mission from Afghanistan, the Minister of Defense underlined that the Romanian Army will give special attention to the support and training of the Afghan army.
Minister Teodor Melescanu mentioned that he had never discussed about the withdrawal of the troops from Afghanistan, and expressed his hope that the Bucharest Summit will adopt an action plan meant to switch the focus from the involvement of Romania in Afghanistan to a gradual transfer of responsibility to the national army.
Teodor Melescanu considers that this will be the strategy adopted for Afghanistan during the Bucharest Summit - to increase the involvement of the Afghan army that should in time take over security tasks, together with the Afghan security forces.
“We hope that in maximum one year we should start acting having this goal in mind,”', mentioned the Ministry of Defense.
In a recent statement, the Minister of Defense expressed his intention to send additional troops in Afghanistan.
