Cioroianu: NATO enlargement could be hindered by the dispute between Greece and Macedonia
The Minister of Foreign Affairs Adrian Cioroianu claims that the enlargement of the North-Atlantic Alliance could be hindered if the dispute between Greece Macedonia isn’t solved.
"I must say that after all these negotiation rounds, the main problem that could lead to the hindrance of the NATO's enlargement by three candidates (Albania, Croatia and Macedonia) is still the dispute between Macedonia and Greece," said Cioroianu at a press conference hold at Victoria Palace, on Thursday.
He expressed his hope that the two countries will use the twelve days left until the summit, "showing the required flexibility to overcome this deadlock."
The Romanian foreign minister admits that the most sensitive topics are related to the political and the enlargement agenda.
At the same time, he added that in Brussels there have already been held four negotiation rounds on the issues to be approached during the NATO Summit in Bucharest.
Asked which might be the things that could affect the summit evolution, Cioroianu said that “the most he fears the things we don’t think of this very moment”.
“Although the institutions involved were numerous, even in Romania could happen such surprise events which I sincerely don’t want to happen”, underlined the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
He added that the summit’s reflection could be shaded by the complaints of the people in the Capital who could be put in the situation to delay “their way to work”.
“I would regret if these complaints, through an exacerbate reflection, would put into bad shade the subjects discussed at the summit”, Cioroianu concluded.
