The Minister Cioroianu presents his political agenda for the NATO summit
The success of the NATO Summit meeting in Bucharest depends on the accomplishment of some concrete goals such as the expansion of the alliance, the strengthening of the Euro-Atlantic partnership and the settlement of some “current files”, the Romanian Foreign Minister Adrian Cioroianu made known on a conference on Thursday.
Romania favours an extensive enlargement of the alliance with all three candidate potential countries - Albania, Croatia and Macedonia. "The invitation of the three states would strengthen the southern flank of the alliance, thus expanding also the security and stability area in the Balkans," said Cioroianu.
He also underlined that he hopes the NATO Summit in Bucharest to take the relation of North-Atlantic Alliance with its partners in the Western Balkans - Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro - to a superior stage.
According to his opinion the premises are favourable in order to take Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro to a superior stage of their relation with the alliance, namely the intensifying dialogue step.
"In Serbia's case, we hope that the summit in Bucharest will launch a strong message regarding the willingness of the alliance to cooperate with Belgrade, as soon as the Serbian authorities are prepared. We hope this will happen as soon as possible”, said Cioroianu.
The event is also expected to further invite Georgia and Ukraine in the Membership Action Plan (MAP) programme.
"Romania is directly interested in seeing Georgia and Ukraine get an
Euro-Atlantic anchor and backs approaches by the two states in this direction," he stressed.

He added that he had recent talks with the Georgian and Ukrainian foreign ministers whom he gave renewed assurance of Romania's support for their countries' being invited to the MAP.
At the same time, Cioroianu mentioned that the Euro-Atlantic partnership continues to have a strategic importance for NATO, including the process of promoting the democratic reforms in the states which won’t become NATO members, but which are interested in collaborating with the allies.
Romania also wants the summit in Bucharest to reconfirm "the allies' unitary approach and action towards Afghanistan." He mentioned that a signal needs to be sent about "enhanced solidarity" of the entire international community.
Referring to Kosovo, Cioroianu said that Romania supports preparations for the role of the Alliance in a controlled process for the management of the future of this territory.
At the same time, the summit in Bucharest is expected to approach several challenges related to the current "security files": at stake are the fight against cyber attacks as well as progress in energy security.
“Romania gives priority and supports the identification of a specific role of NATO with regards to the energetic security which might take into account the Allies’ expertise and experience and constitute an added value of NATO to the efforts of other actors in this field”, said Cioroianu.
A NATO-UN declaration is very likely to be adopted on the same occasion, representing a material result of the meeting, with particular relevance for the future of the organizations' cooperation, inclusively in theatres of operation like Afghanistan, Cioroianu revealed. He added that at a technical level a text project was agreed on, but it still has to be homologated at a political level.
On the occasion of the summit, Romania will support the approval of a decision regarding the adoption of a NATO missile shield to complement and integrate with the U.S. system, according to the principle of NATO members' solidarity and indivisibility.
At the same time, to go further with NATO’s process of transformation, Romania will support within the summit the development of the initiatives in the information superiority field and the maritime monitorization project of the North Atlantic Alliance.
