The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Adrian Cioroianu, stated on Thursday that Republic of Moldavia’s neutrality is a political decision, and he added that the potential granting of the Membership Action Plan (MAP) for Georgia and Ukraine, an initiative supported by Romania, can’t be influenced by Chisinau’s position.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Adrian Cioroianu, declared that he doesn’t see a direct connection between Republic of Moldavia’s neutrality and the MAP granting for Georgia and Ukraine. Cioroianu appreciated there is an increase of NATO support in the ranks of public opinion, in Ukraine as well as in Georgia, and he reminded that the two states manifested their wish to obtain the Membership Action Plan.
Referring to the Chisinau Government statement regarding the "eternal neutrality", the Minister considered this to be a "political decision, maybe also linked to the future 2009 elections from the Republic of Moldavia".
"We are still analysing to what extent this neutrality of the Republic of Moldavia could be linked or not to the desired conclusion of the Transnistria conflict", added Cioroianu.
Talking about Ukraine and Georgia, Adrian Cioroianu reiterrated Romania’s support for granting the MAP, appreciating that this initiative responds to our country’s interests in the area.
Cioroianu also said that Romania supports the idea of states such as Serbia, Bosnia and Hertzegovina and Montenegro starting a better relationship with NATO. Furthermore, according to Cioroianu, there are grounds to assume that an intensified dialogue in the relationship with Bosnia, Hertzegovina and Montenegro is developing.
The Moldavian President, Vladimir Voronin, reiterrated on Saturday as part of the 6th Congress of the Communist Party from the Republic of Moldavia, the necessity of international recognition of the country’s neutrality. "Moldavia united must not only be neutral, but should also insist on the international recongnition of its status. The Communist Party does not see fit to change this status of our country in the near future, since we consider that taking part in military alliances is a dangerous anachronism, generating new separating boundaries and artificial conflicts.", declared Voronin, who is also the president of the Communist Party of the Republic of Moldavia.
