The American Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, assured the Ukrainian President Viktor Iuscenko on Wednesday of the USA support for Ukraine’s joining NATO, during a meeting on the Economics Forum from Davos. Condoleezza Rice “reiterated the USA position that NATO should leave an open door for democratic European countries that meet the accession criteria”, said the spokesman of the American State Department, Sean McCormack.
Ukraine had officially applied last week for joining the Action Plan in April, in order to further join NATO, that being the last step before actually joining the organization. This decision was followed by a harsh response from Moscow, who warned that allowing this ex-soviet republic to join NATO would seriously complicate the Russian- Ukrainian relations and threatened Kiev to take measures against it.
